Over the last few year, Perth-based quartet Humming. has been a rising force within the alternative, indie and grunge rock genres. Featuring the talents of musicians Beau, Danyon, Jedd and Zac, the band melds their individual influences into a cohesive and exciting sound that balances soft reverb tones with heavy-hitting distortion.
Together they craft a sound that’s at once diverse yet distinctly their own, exploring the fringes of their own sonic vision. This blend creates a thrilling sensation of freedom that flow between nostalgic dread, a hallmark of their music that continues to win over listeners across Australia and beyond.
First making an entrance in 2020 with the debut single “Goodbye,” singles two and three came the following year before they dropped their debut eponymous EP. Since then, they’ve shared a string of well-received singles as they’ve continued going from strength to strength as a band.
Now they bring us their latest release with their brand new sophomore EP. The four-track release, titled Far Below, provides the perfect snapshot of the latest chapter of Humming.’s exciting musical story.
Kicked off by the soft guitar tones of “Fade Away,” an airy atmospheres give way to a mellow groove as the laid back snap of drums ushers in the smooth vocals, threading gently melodies above that subtly rise in intensity as the arrangement swells with crunchy guitars to form a grunge-tinged anthem. With angsty lyricism and bold lead guitar lines, the track builds to a powerful rock sound that develops from it’s soothing beginning to its raucous conclusion in spectacular fashion.
“Afterthought” wastes no time is jumping straight in with a bouncy rhythm, lively guitar lines and expressive vocals delivering commanding lines with pure rock swagger. Maintaining it’s uptempo energy throughout, it’s s high-octane rock jam that sees the band channel their pent up energy into a charging and catchy outing.
With “Restless” they showcase the depth of their songwriting panache with an anthemic sound brimming with slick ebb and flow where memorable vocal melodies carrying poignant lyricism ride a shifting arrangement. With intricate lead guitar lines leading the song into a stripped-back moment, the track launches into an epic finale to leave a lasting memory.
Closing the EP with “Spine,” the twang of plucked guitar notes ring out as the roll of drums sets up the vocals to apply moving lines above. Erupting with gritty guitar work and splashing drums, the track delivery a sharp burst of grunge-fuelled energy before the rise and fall brings back the tender aesthetic of the verse, to then conclude the song and EP with a stelar fusion of both raw rock energy and thoughtful songwriting.
