RIL is a talented creator and musician from Tottenham who’s been an impression on the UK rap scene with his unique sound and storytelling lyricism. From a young age, RIL’s passion for music was ignited through collaborations with his cousin, a producer specialising in hip hop, rap and grime.
This early exposure helped shape his own style, which has evolved over the years into a jazz-infused UK rap sound cut with punchline-laden lyrics. RIL’s stage name, derived from his last name, Riley, is a reflection of his desire to be recognised by those who appreciate his music.
To date, he’s released an impressive catalogue of music including three mixtapes, three EPs and eight singles including “Paddling Pools,” which has racked up over a million streams, alongside his mixtape Livin Sports Part 3, which has also surpassed the million-stream mark. RIL’s music is built on an authenticity that connects with a broad spectrum of listeners. His lyrics often explore themes of relationships, life experiences and his passion for boxing, blending personal context with broader social commentary.
Recently, he’s been releasing a string of EPs that form the Different Sports series. Now he brings us his latest release with the fourth instalment in the project via the new EP titled DS4: Different Sports. Covering a range of genres and musical styles, the new EP marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for this exciting artist.
Kicked off with the smooth, grooving beat of “Summery,” hazy instrumental tones and punchy drums underpin RIL’s slick rapped flows to deliver a UK hip hop sound that pairs airy textures with crisp beats and vocal delivery. “Ril & Rilo” builds on this sound as the twinkle of piano plinks are met with his commanding vocal style before the rattle of percussion and deep rumble of bass tones collide to form another showcase of his original sound, lyrical flair and stellar vocal flow.
“Dr. Merten” blends the snap of drums with dreamy instrumental tones of sax and keys as soft vocal samples drift through the mix before RIL’s rich vocals take the lead to craft an engaging sound from start to finish. Closing the EP with “Gimme Some More,” the upbeat pulse of bass and percussion sets the rhythm as gentle instrumental flutters add colour to the arrangement while RIL lays down one final masterclass in modern UK rap performance above.
Commenting on his musical adventure, he shares, “When people hear my music I want them to learn more about me and if you already know me, I’d like you to reminisce on memories we’ve shared or experiences to come.”
