Hailing from Trenton in New Jersey, Maur Kii is a rising artist whose passion for music has shaped his life and career. He started writing songs at the age of ten and by the time he attended Rider University in 2012, he was already pursuing a formal education in Music Culture.
Maur Kii’s journey has since led him to the Los Angeles Film & Recording School, where he continues to sharpen his creative vision. His own sound is a fusion of hip hop and R&B, a style he likens to auto-tune artists like Travis Scott and Tory Lanez. His music is all about vibe and emotion, a sound that captures the complexities of life, whether through slick, catchy hooks or reflective lyrical moments.
Over the years, he’s opened for leading names like Kevin Gates, Migos and Joe Budden, confirming his status in the music scene as a must watch artist. First making his artistic entrance in 2019, he appeared on the track “Bounce” alongside Dab Papi and Jodae before dropping his collaborative debut EP, Jersey Overload!, later that year. Since then, he’s released multiple singles, EPs and records to deliver an impressive catalogue of music that’s connected with fans around the world.
Now he brings us his latest release with his brand new EP titled MAURNB: THE YEAR WAS. This EP sees him further explore his R&B influences, framing different eras of the genre while recounting a tale about love, lust and emotional tug-of-war. The EP loosely chronicles a relationship between Maur and a romantic interest, unfolding across a series of songs that depict different stages of their interaction. With a cinematic touch, the project unfolds like a short film, with each track revealing a new facet of the story.
The opening track, “Streets,” gets things going with a metaphorical context, referencing both the streets in terms of the artist’s pursuit of a woman and as a nod to another hit single. Over the downtempo punch of the beat, Maur Kii’s bright and expressive voice spins compelling melodic leads above the atmospheric electronic arrangement to craft an immersive and catchy soundscape.
Following up with “4 The Weekend,” he continues the story, detailing his anticipation for spending time with a woman he’s interested in. Linking up with Wontel, deep bass tones contrast the airy vocal textures, crafting a smooth stripped back jam peppered with spacey vocalisations and slick instrumental flourishes.
“Naked” serves up bold bouncy rhythms with the rattle of the beat and stab of bass blending with soft instrumental plucks as infectious vocal hooks glide above to craft a memorable alternative R&B anthem. Collaborating with Afterdrk on “Deeper,” the EP’s story takes a sensual turn, with the artists diving into the passionate side of the encounter, serving up a mellow groover brimming with blissful melodies and vibrant arrangement.
“Options,” featuring Randy White, lays down an uptempo outing packed full of upbeat rhythms and intricate ebb and flow with both artists threading superb vocal performances. Closing the EP with “Who Cries In A Maybach?,” the emotional climax of the EP brings the story to a conclusion via a moving finale driven by deep bass tones and thumping beats as silky vocal layers drift above to deliver an enveloping final moment on the release.
