Coming out of the DIY music scene of the Pacific Northwest, Kai Voltage is an artist who’s been winning over audiences with his genre-blurring approach to performance and recording. Known for his relentless energy and multi-instrumental panache, Kai Voltage’s solo shows are built on his incredible artistic range, featuring a thrilling mix of drumming, guitar and live looping.
With each live set and release, he constantly reimagines his sound, offering something new each time to keep listeners guessing. A dedicated “tone fanatic,” Kai Voltage takes full control of his artistic vision, from writing each song to performing every instrument on his recordings.
Now he brings us his latest studio release with his brand new EP titled The Spell, a two-track release that captures the perfect snapshot of the latest chapter in his exciting musical story. Recorded in the Cowichan Valley in Canada over the last year, the release was mastered by Stu McKillop at Rain City Mastering in Vancouver.
Opened by the title track, “The Spell” injects an immediate energy with the strike of drums as Kai jumps into a bouncy rock affair brimming with crunchy guitar chords and compelling vocal leads. Kai Voltage’s choice to stick with a steady, hard-hitting beat rather than a rapid tempo invites listeners to sink into the rhythm and feel every moment.
True to its title, “The Spell” encapsulates the struggle against distractions and forces that pull us away from the things that truly matter. Cut with fuzzy lead licks, the charge of the drums and expressive vocal performance, it’s a superb ninety second jam that delivers an engaging and memorable dose of modern rock n’ roll.
On the EP’s second track, “Evil Eye,” Kai Voltage pays homage to his enduring passion for gritty guitar arrangement with a grooving blues-inflected rock outing. The song was first started as an acoustic piece, conceived outdoors before mutating with layers of overdrive and shuffling drum rhythms.
Laying down sharp, swaggering vocal lines above, the track builds to an epic finale where slick guitar leads glide above the hop of the track’s energy to serve up another concise and highly original sound. Once again showcasing his creative flair and performance talent, with The Spell EP, Kai Voltage delivers an exciting slice of his raucous rock sound that’s sure to win over listeners and entertain live audiences.
