Based in Cornwall in the south west of the UK, newcomers COSM is formed by lead singer and guitarist Tom Hunter, Jim Hunter on bass, guitarist Emily Howarth and Zach O’Loughlin on drums. Together they combine to deliver their own shared sonic vision that brings together elements of psych rock, indie, dream pop and shoegaze to craft something entirely new.
First making their entrance in May this year, they released their debut single “Weightless,” which they’ve since followed up with singles two and three. Throughout their breakout year, COSM has become a fixture in the UK’s festival and live music scene, playing alongside artists like Mother Vulture and Blank Atlas, bringing their music alive on stage at Torquay’s Burn It Down Festival, Wanderfal and Whisper Fresher’s Fest.
Now, building on their momentum, they bring us the perfect run through of their sound with the release of their brand new debut eponymous EP titled COSM EP. Born from the ashes of past musical projects, personal challenges and even a transatlantic relocation, the EP distils the drive and creativity that define the band into an engaging five-track release.
Kicked off by the jumpy guitar rhythms of opening track “So I Let Go,” the song bursts to life with lively drums and stacks of guitar and bass to deliver an energising sweep of hazy indie rock. Tom’s smooth vocals enter to spin elegant melodies above the bouncy shuffle of the arrangement before building with an emphatic chorus capped by soaring vocalisations. Cut with wah-drenched guitar leads, it’s an epic dose of the band’s anthemic sound that immediately grabs your attention.
“Say About Me” flows from breezy clean tones and splashy drums to the uptempo charge of pop-focused rock music, resulting in a superb jam brimming with catchy hooks and slick ebb and flow. On “Warmglow,” the soft warble of instrumental textures present a drifting, mesmeric soundscape before the laid back shuffle of drums leads to an eruption of intense sonic energy, crafting an enveloping instrumental interlude.
Their debut single “Weightless” gradually builds from an atmospheric intro to a flurry of crunching guitar chords and twanging leads driven by pounding drums before settling into an intricate verse that pairs dreamy guitar tones and bass lines with impassioned vocals. With another anthemic chorus of instantly memorable melodies and rousing energy, it’s a spectacular display of COSM’s incredible musical output. Closing the EP with “Reverberate,” the band offers an expansive voyage of dynamic energies, alternating between ethereal moods and robust rock aesthetic led by stunning lead guitar work. Having made an impactful introduction on their first year, 2025 is set to be even more exciting for this thrilling new act on the rise.
Commenting on the release, frontman Tom Hunter shares, “It’s a culmination of the emotions and experiences that came with uprooting everything in the US to move to the UK [with brother and bassist Jim]. Sound-wise it sits somewhere between psych and shoegaze, but also draws all sorts of influences from the last fifty years of music and culture. It’s been pretty liberating to take away the rules and focus on writing. These tracks came about just when I needed them the most.”
