Canadian artist FAWNA is the solo project of singer-songwriter Jenna Deagle-Potter, who takes elements of R&B, trip hop and electronic styles to craft a groundbreaking sound. Using her unique artistic vision to explore themes of vulnerability and empowerment, she’s grown stronger over the past eight years, winning over fans around the world.
Starting out in Halifax, her move to Montreal in 2014 saw her sonic output truly take shape, combining her passion for music with her background in visual art under the FAWNA banner. Her debut came two years later with the release of Vol. 1, a striking EP that introduced listeners to her ethereal, emotive style, which featured the breakout single “Take It or Leave It” and firmly established FAWNA as a rising talent. FAWNA then began collaborating with producer Cobrayama on the 2019 EP Clear and since then, she’s released a string of singles over the last few years while working with artists such as Frase, Moontricks, Aspen King and Ero Sin.
Now, FAWNA returns with Vol. 2, the highly anticipated follow-up to her debut EP. This six-track project ventures furthers into the ideas of determination and renewal, serving as a poignant reflection of her own personal journey which has been shaped by profound loss and the challenges of toxic relationships.
The EP starts with the soft bubble of synths and airy vocalisations on opening track “Nola,” featuring singer-songwriter Ero Sin. Over the crisp strike of a trip hop style beat, FAWNA’s alluring alternative R&B-inflected vocals glide above pulsing bass grooves to form a dreamy jam packed full of infectious rhythm lifted by Ero Sin’s slick rapped flows, resulting in an enveloping and catchy outing that’s at once accessible and forward-thinking.
With “Energy,” FAWNA crafts a minimal arrangement of gentle synth textures cut with the sharp punch of crunchy percussion capped by her engaging vocal leads. Progressing with intense sliding bass lines, it’s a superb showcase of her memorable songwriting and vocal panache wrapped up in a future R&B aesthetic. Linking with Blanche on “Hawk,” the two singer engage in an elegant duet where overlapping lines of silky vocals drift above hazy instrumental tones and rattling percussion.
“Disposition” takes things into a downtempo territory as smooth synth swells blend with stacked vocal layers and mellow beats to forge a mesmeric slice of graceful vocal performance and hypnotic arrangement. Working with Ero Sin again on “Feels,” the pair cast a sleek alternative hip hop jam where Ero Sin’s razor-sharp delivery is met by FAWNA’s dazzling voice, setting up a catchy sound of bouncy rhythms and stunning interplay between the two artists. Final track “Flutter” brings sultry vibes with laid back percussion and softly floating vocals to deliver a charming finale to FAWNA’s incredible new EP.
