Latvian-born artist Cherry Makes Waves has been turning heads in the music world with her unique fusion of dream pop and art rock, enhanced by cutting-edge AI-driven sonic textures and spellbinding visuals. Cherry is a true multimedia creator, pairing sound, movement and imagery to craft experiences that are thoroughly innovative and immersive. Her work is built on her groundbreaking artistic vision, where every song is accompanied by a self-directed, visually arresting music video.
On stage, Cherry’s performances are truly unforgettable experiences, featuring choreographed dance, AI-generated visuals and virtual fashion that take audiences to a daring, futuristic sphere. This thrilling approach has already come to life on some of Europe’s most iconic stages, from Amsterdam’s CREA Theatre and Utrecht Music Week to London venues like 93 Feet East and 229. Performing at festivals, art spaces and traditional music venues, her shows deliver a highly original blend of performance art and musical storytelling, staking her claim as one of the most exciting acts on the rise today.
Making her entrance in 2019, she dropped her debut release with the three-track EP, which she’s since followed up with a string of impressive singles. Now, she’s unveiled her much-anticipated sophomore EP, 90 Beats Per Minute, a concept-driven project that explores rhythm, texture and emotion all while locked to a singular tempo.
The aptly named 90 Beats Per Minute is a stunning display of Cherry’s ability to innovate within constraints. Featuring five tracks, each crafted at the same tempo, the EP was recorded across Latvia, the Netherlands, Spain, Canada and the USA, the project captures an international spirit of creativity.
Opened by “Spaceman,” the spacey swell of synth textures creates a mesmeric atmosphere that gradually develops with stuttered synth rhythms and pounding drums. Building with Cherry’s hushed vocals, the laid back shuffle of drums and hazy pulse of synth elements is met with hypnotic instrumental plucks, resulting in an enveloping soundscape that showcases the pioneering sonic output of Cherry Makes Waves.
“Phaeton” follows with the ominous tones of bass synth as the rattling snap of drums ushers in Cherry’s moody vocal leads. Casting a gripping alternative pop sound, the fluttering hi hats and deep synth textures combine to serve up an instantly memorable sound of dark and experimental pop unlike anything else. With “BIG LEAGUE,” Cherry lays down an angsty beat-driven jam cut with art rock aesthetics capped by her commanding vocal performance.
On “Home (Complete),” she reveals a more tender side on the EP with a delicate, dream pop vibe where her airy vocals float above soft string plucks, bright chimes and mellow percussion. Progressing with soft rhythms, pulsing bass elements and warm piano notes, it’s an enticing track that pulls you in and doesn’t let go across its four minute voyage.
The EP finishes with title track “90 Beats Per Minute” where the patter of percussive shots and layered vocals are wrapped in a stripped back arrangement, framing Cherry’s alluring songwriting in a more intimate setting. It’s a superb finale to a sensational EP, one that perfectly captures the innovative and engaging musical world that Cherry Makes Waves is making.
