Netherlands-born producer and vocalist Malvae has just dropped his lead single of 2020, ‘Purpose’ linking up with singer Esther Veen on the track. The first taste of a larger environmentally-based project in the Amazon rainforest to come, it takes his sample-based ethos into mesmerising territory as he begins a sonic adventure with Esther Veen lending her stunning vocals to match.
The Dutch artist is a global traveler who incorporates sounds from across the world into his music. He initially burst onto the scene in 2017 with his debut single ‘Haunts Me’, also featuring Esther Veen, which ascended to #17 on Spotify’s Viral 50 charts in the United States and notched a feature in the Japanese Netflix series Terrace House.
He went on to release two singles via the acclaimed label CloudKid which featured sounds entirely composed from his mouth, leading to a slot at the Netherlands’ Popronde 2018 and an opening performance on Shallou’s Souls tour. Most recently self-releasing two tracks ‘DWLY’ and ‘Call Me Back’ in 2019, his focus has now shifted toward a full-length project with more information teased in the coming months.
On ‘Purpose’ Malvae builds a dynamic base of electronic sounds, creating a widescreen mix of IDM and Future Bass elements. The producer’s vocals weave delicately with Esther Veen’s ethereal voice soaring above. The fluttering instrumental sounds are anchored by a glitching and clacking percussive array on this worthy electronic collaboration.
Commenting on the new release, Malvae explains, “Purpose is about letting go of who you thought you were, and facing who you are. Floating apart from that fake perception. Acceptance, finding purpose in your life and growing from your experiences.”
Continuing, “It is what created the basis for me behind this project and that is how it came to be that I set out on this adventure. I came to a point where I thought I had to choose between music and doing good in the world. But instead I think I found a way to combine it, where I can pursue both.”
