Malvae (AKA Jim van der Breggen) is a global traveler who incorporates sounds from across the world into his music. He initially burst onto the scene in 2017 with his debut single “Haunts Me (feat. Esther Veen)” which ascended to #17 on Spotify’s Viral 50 charts in the United States and notched a feature in the Japanese Netflix series Terrace House. He went on to release two singles via the acclaimed label CloudKid which featured sounds entirely composed from his mouth, leading to a slot at the Netherlands’ Popronde 2018 and an opening performance on Shallou‘s Souls tour.
Recently, he quietly embarked on a months-long journey through the Amazon Rainforest and documented his life-changing expedition on a forthcoming full-length project titled Amazonas.
A brand new taste of the album called “Tuyuka” finds him sampling the namesake tribe who graciously welcomed him in and allowed him to record their instruments for the project. With their blessing and proper compensation, the tribe’s music has been modulated into pure electronic catharsis whose low-end drives the samples into a state of bliss.
Alongside the release of “Tuyuka” and Amazonas, Malvae also plans to donate 10% of all streams and sales to an organisation that protects the rainforest and tribes like the Tuyuka.
Commenting on the track, Malvae explains, “I made my way to an indigenous tribe in Brazil who go by the name of Tuyuka. They had relocated near a huge jungle city called Manaus to share their knowledge and culture, to be a part of civilization. They are originally from deep within the jungle between the Columbian, Venezuelan and Brazilian border.”
Continuing, “Due to drug traffickers and illegal loggers that want to exploit their environment, part of their group had relocated near Manaus. They thought this way they would receive help from the Brazilian government as they thought they would then have a place in society. I translated these feelings into the song while also using their instruments and their voices in this production.”
