Tangent is a Dutch electronic music duo that combines electronics with more traditional instruments in a highly contrasting manner. They bring us the lead track from Evolutionary Cycles, the 5th album by the ambient beat duo.
With their latest track, they craft a deeply atmospheric and sparse sonic world, peppered with modulating percussion shots and stretched out synthesisers. “The Origin Of Structures” perfectly captures their dark and reflective sound offering dynamic rhythms and balanced textures throughout.
Their previous album Approaching Complexity leaned heavily on piano motifs. In contrast, their new album spotlights the duo’s adeptness at creating an atmosphere that focuses on moody elongated synths and tightly syncopated percussion experiments.
The album can be viewed as one of their more sullen efforts. During the writing process, the duo used the impact the human race has on nature as their overall inspiration; while this is a troubling and topical subject, there is always lightness in juxtaposition to Tangent’s emotional weight.
Their music takes its audience on a journey through sonic fields that seem infinite. Matter seems to be formed and collapsing simultaneously, much like a new universe being created on the ashes of a previous one.Â
Always searching for the best quality of sound, the duo of Ralph van Reijendam (drums for Fire Walk with Us, Rob Klerkx and The Secret) and Robbert Kok (vocals for Disavowed, Synesis Absorption) constantly push their own musical boundaries by finding new and creative ways of working with sound.
