Owari is the alias of 21-year-old electronic artist, photographer, and engineer, Oliver Still from Kent, UK. Incorporating organic samples, ambient textures, and playful percussion, the project showcases a unique impression to the genre.
His influences stem from artists on the Ninja Tune and Brainfeeder rosters such as Bonobo and Teebs, as well as the ambient and modern-classical likes of Nils Frahm and Tim Hecker.
Following his successes on Soundcloud, the project gained early support from Abbie McCarthy and Huw Stephens at BBC Music Introducing, receiving ‘Track of the Week’ on BBC Radio Kent and multiple plays on late night BBC Radio 1. Furthermore, Owari was asked to officially remix MJ Cole’s single “Pictures In My Head” at the end of 2017.
Additionally, ahead of its release, Slow Magic selected the debut single from the debut EP, A New Era, to be apart of his recent Imaginary Friends Mixtape for Apple Music earlier in 2019. More recently, early versions of the upcoming subsequent EP have been supported by the likes of Charlie Bones on NTS Radio and Laurence Guy on Rinse FM.
Played by Laurence Guy on RinseFM and Charlie Bones on NTS Radio, “Rituals” is the producer’s latest release. A delicate and richly textured ambient electronic piece that utilises background samples and found sounds to craft an engaging sonic world. The atmosphere slowly builds as the gentle lull or the percussion develops, with an ethereal sound building throughout the arrangement.
Commenting on the track, the artist offers, “Rituals is my most honest and personal release. This was heavily inspired by the electronic downtempo and indietronica likes of Teebs, Baths, and Teen Daze. Most samples were collected from various recordings from my past, such as voice notes of my old band practice or my various travels to Europe, together forming something very personal.”
Owari plans to independently release a 5 track EP over the course of this year to present the project’s new direction and refined sound.
