Haulm is a collaboration between vocalist/composer, JT Norton, and electronic producer, Reed Kackley (BAILE). The two met in 2012, playing in similar Brooklyn-based bands, but didn’t find themselves working together until 2017. What began with some casual vocal sessions meant for BAILE, quickly took on a shape of its own: Haulm.
Their style meshes minimal electronic compositions, influenced by downtempo & techno, with honest and intimate vocals. Blending modular sounds with analog synthesisers & foley sfx, Norton and Kackley are writing music that fuses a sense of sincerity together with a desire to create compelling dance grooves.
Now the minimalist electronic duo return with “Blind”, a downcast dance track inspired by a year being locked inside.
“This song is the product of pandemic frustration while simultaneously trying to not be about that frustration,” says vocalist/producer JT Norton. “It’s just about people not listening to one another, and that can sound as political as you’d like it to be. But ideally, this song is playing in a Michael Mann film while Tom Cruise is assassinating drug dealers in a strobe filled night club.“
“Blind” follows the quietly vitriolic “Call The Waves”, a softly scathing rebuke of global leadership, premiered via Billboard earlier this year. While “Waves” gave off a fidgety singer-songwriter energy, producer Reed Kackley, who also works under the name BAILE, brings his hazy house stylings to the proceedings on “Blind”.
The track joins a catalog of material that has amassed over 6 million streams online, with marquee playlist adds at Spotify (Ultimate Indie, Chill Vibes) and Apple Music (Today’s Chill, Late Night Menu), alongside airplay on KCRW, KCMP, Open Air and more.
While the pandemic has kept the duo – Kackley based in Brooklyn, and Norton based in Austin – at home for the past twelve months, the years preceding it found Haulm hitting the road for support tours and live dates alongside electronic luminaries such as HONNE, Pollo & Pan & Zimmer.
Released via Grand Jury Music “Blind” delivers the duo’s shuffling minimal house sound full of colourful synth work and downtempo vocal lines, all wrapped up in their trademark rhythmic indie electronic sound.
