Global bass from Minev

UK-based electronic music artist Minev, originally hailing from, Bulgaria, made his official debut with his Capital EP in 2020. His compositions balance the energy of club music with complexity and musicality that demands a closer listen, whist showcasing his ability to seamlessly cross over genre boundaries.

The city of London, the adoptive home of Minev, is also the inspiration behind his dark but danceable electronic sound, whilst his Bulgarian cultural upbringing can also be felt amongst his releases. The result is an artistic mix that makes his music just as suited for playing through headphones whilst walking aimlessly through the city, as it is for being played in smoke-filled industrial dance floor spaces.

Now he brings us his latest release with the track “Valya”, a tribute to Valya Balkanska, a Bulgarian cultural icon and world renowned folk singer. In 1977, her recoding of Izlel e Delyo Haidutin was sent to travel beyond our solar system on board the Voyager spacecraft, one of a select group of recordings chosen to represent humankind. A sample from her likewise transcendental recording of Dobre Mi Doide, Yunache has been reimagined in this electronic music composition

Commenting on the track, the producer offers, “Mixing electronic music and the sound of millennia-old culture from the Rhodope mountains is perhaps an audacious move, but I do so with respect and love for both genres. Whatever the result, I hope this track helps the ‘negativity flow away down the rivers, carried away by the water’ as per Valya’s own words in the interview sample.”

An atmospheric electronic sound, on “Valya” Minev delivers a driving mix of bass and UK garage to give new life to the original vocal samples. As new and old collide, they create a fresh energy that contrasts and compliments in equal measure.
