Sleep Surgeon is a lo-fi, downtempo and cinematic music project from UK-based, multi-instrumentalist and producer Zac Thompson. Sleep Surgeon’s sound tastefully straddles the lines between the electronic and the analogue, with lush sonic environments crafted using a palette of acoustic instruments and synthesisers, to offer an ethereal and transcendent listening experience.
Taking inspiration from acts including Air, Zero 7, Bonobo and moow, the artist has carved out an identifiable and exponentially engaged audience; the music is intended to provide a soundtrack for meditation, relaxation, and generally hitting the re-set button on the stresses of the day. But what sets this unique artist apart is their pertinent adherence to film composition fundamentals, utilising an abundance of subtlety and nuance to evoke an almost imperceptible emotional response in the listener.
Selectively applying the compositional principles of renowned composers such as Hans Zimmer, Trent Reznor and Philip Glass, has meant Sleep Surgeon’s music is a far cry from a carelessly curated collection of loops and samples, but rather an immersive sonic treatment to move the soul.
His self-titled debut album, released in June 2020, was extremely well received by a fledgeling but immediately captivated audience, achieving over 30,000 streams in its first 2 weeks since release, entirely organically. The lead single from the album, “A Breath of Dawn”, was an instant hit with chill-hop lovers, and received support from Virgin Radio’s Kate Lawler, who felt that the Sleep Surgeon had a huge amount to offer those in need of a mental de-clutter and a late-night musical caress.
The prolific producer has since gone on to release 2 further albums, Neon and Anywhere is Fine if I’m With You, and has been championed by Spotify Editors (Brain Food – 3.5M), BBC Music Introducing and an innumerable slew of tastemakers and playlist curators in the worlds of ambient, lo-fi and downtempo music.
Now the artists returns with the new track “Falling”, building on his blissfully ambient catalogue of music. The new releases offers his trademark chilled atmospheric composition, full of rich textures of gentle instrumentation, delicate beats and floating vocal samples to create a deeply engaging and relaxing sonic world.
