For several decades, Stephen H. Cumberbatch has treated music as an open-ended experiment and now, recording under the name C’batch, the White Plains-based composer, producer, author and multi-instrumentalist has built a creative life around following an idea wherever it leads. Moving between guitars, keyboards, synths and samplers, his work reflects an artist keen to explore multiple musical areas, resulting in a diverse catalogue full of surprises.
His steadfast independent spirit has been present since 1984, when Stephen and Yvette Cumberbatch co-founded Stevette Music, Inc. The company provided a platform for Stephen to develop and release music according to his own vision, establishing an artistic philosophy that’s continued to flourish over the years. As an established ASCAP member with decades of experience behind him, C’batch has continued to walk his own artistic path, allowing changing technology and developing musical landscapes to become new opportunities.
His music consequently exists across a broad spectrum; smooth jazz, contemporary R&B, pop, electronic production, ambient textures and cinematic influences all find their way into the C’batch sound in a flexibility that gives his catalogue a sense of movement. One track can lean into warmth, another towards electronic detail, another towards something more expansive and cinematic but there remains an underlying sense of purpose connecting the different directions.
It’s especially apparent in the ongoing Vault series, which offers a particularly intriguing relationship between past and present. Drawing on material originally developed during the Unfinished Business era alongside C’batch & Herring, the series takes earlier compositions and subjects them to contemporary technology and production techniques. Ideas that might once have remained unfinished can now be reconstructed, expanded and reimagined, with musical concepts from an earlier point in C’batch’s career given another opportunity to come to life.

Now, following the original version released earlier this year, C’batch returns with a completely reimagined remix of “Next Time (I Won’t Be Falling),” now retitled “Next Time (I Won’t Be Falling/You’ve Got Me Falling).” The new version transforms the song into a colourful dance track, combining soulful vocals with slick electronic production and infectious house rhythms. Tthe song is about determination, healing and the unexpected possibility of finding love again and while the emotional context remains important, the remix changes the environment around it.
Where the sentiment could have remained based in reflection, the new production gives it movement, turning recovery into something you can dance to. Drifting with alluring instrumental textures and warm vocalisations, the song glides with shimmering tones as the pulse of bass and snap of drums brings in soulful vocals which swirl into a dazzling soul pop soundscape. Overlapping vocal layers and softly snapping beats dashed with delicate instrumentation combines to cast a stunning musical moment that intoxicating, danceable and impossible not to love.
Warm vocals and a catchy chorus sit against a bright electronic backdrop, creating a track that balances emotional storytelling with an upbeat energy, resulting in a superb remix that reframes the original song in a beautiful new setting. The past isn’t necessarily something to leave behind, sometimes it’s material waiting to be transformed and”Next Time (I Won’t Be Falling/You’ve Got Me Falling)” takes that idea and gives it a beat, a chorus and a reason to keep moving.
Commenting on the release, C’batch shares, “This remix represents finding joy after heartbreak. Sometimes when you’ve decided you won’t fall again… someone comes along and changes everything.”
