Paris-based artist John Miller views electronic music as a form of emotional excavation, digging through memory, heartbreak and reflection to uncover songs that feel familiar yet somehow displaced from the world around them. Working entirely as a solo artist, John has developed a distinctive creative concept in which personal experiences become transmissions from an imagined civilisation that never existed, resulting in electronic music that can feel cinematic and melancholic, while retaining its human touch.
The mythology is inseparable from the emotion and his imagined distant transmissions provide a framework for music born from genuinely personal experiences, allowing intimate moments to take on an otherworldly quality. Heartbreak becomes atmosphere, reflection becomes rhythm and memory finds a new form through electronic soundscapes. In that sense, his music operates almost like a diary translated into sound, with melody and texture carrying emotions that remain recognisable even when the world surrounding them feels fictional.
John introduced that sonic vision in 2023 with his debut single âGates of Summerâ and two further singles followed before his first full-length record, Mixed Musical Art Mma, arrived the following year. Since then, he’s continued to build his catalogue through several singles and a trio of EPs, expanding the output of his project. With a more techno-focused EP now on the way, his latest single titled âWhen I Sleepâ offers another revealing window into the emotional world behind the electronic machinery.

The story behind the track begins with the end of a long relationship; for John Miller, sleep had always been something of an enemy and even as a child, he disliked the idea of sleeping because it felt like surrendering hours of his life. But heartbreak fundamentally altered that relationship with sleep and suddenly, dreams became the one place where the person he loved could still exist.
It’s an idea loaded with the particular cruelty of loss: reality becomes the place where absence is unavoidable, while sleep becomes the place where reunion remains possible. âWhen I Sleepâ takes that contradiction and turns it into the foundation of a breakup song that is as much about longing for sleep as it is about longing for someone. Night-time is where the song’s two realities meet, the waking world of separation and the dream world where the relationship can briefly return.
Set up by soft synth notes and the pulse of percussion, the track develops with the snap of drums as gentle vocals glide above, casting an emotive and energising dance pop scene. Flowing with infectious melodic lines and tender vocal elements, contrasted by the steady drive of the arrangement, “When I Sleep” serves up a moving electronic outing that’s catchy, danceable and thematically profound all at once.
John Millerâs music consistently reaches between the highly personal and the otherworldly, taking real emotional experiences and presenting them as fragments from somewhere beyond ordinary reality. Here, however, the imagined future feels especially close to the present and the strange transmission is ultimately a familiar human experience of missing someone, wanting to see them again and finding that the mind can briefly provide what reality cannot. As John Miller looks toward a more techno-focused chapter, âWhen I Sleepâ captures the tension that makes his work compelling, offering electronic music built from memory, but shaped for the night.
