Hailing from Columbus, fromtheswamp is an artistic project built on independence, experimentation and a sound that’s intrinsically linked to environment. Operating from a bedroom studio, the multi-instrumentalist takes complete control of the creative process, playing every instrument and programming the drums entirely alone, resulting in music that feels fluid and personal, shaped by a steadfast DIY ethos and an environmental consciousness that places the natural world at the centre of the work.
There’s no obvious formula to the sound, with fromtheswamp drawing unexpected inspiration from the likes of The Strokes and Bob Dylan, before filtering those influences through an entirely unique creative lens. The biggest influence, however, comes from the world outside, with nature serving as the project’s central muse and fromtheswamp attempting to translate its essence into sound. By not just making music about the environment, the artist is interested in creating music that can reconnect listeners with it and that distinction gives the project a sense of meaning while retaining a style of experimentation.
Every component is handled with the same hands-on philosophy, from instruments to drum programming, fromtheswamp builds each track independently, using the limitations and possibilities of a bedroom studio as part of the creative process. There’s an economy to the approach, too, with neither instrument nor phrase wasted and every element has a role to play in constructing soundscapes that form immersive musical spheres that listeners can get fully wrapped up in.

That sense of careful construction meets improvisation on the recent single “peaceful waters,” a song recorded through an improvisational process which captures the unpredictable quality of an idea allowed to develop naturally. It’s music that seeks to discover where the sound itself might lead while thematically responding to an increasingly indoor-bound existence, using sound as an invitation to look beyond walls and reconnect with the environment that surrounds us.
Brought in by the taps of percussion as the intricate flicker of guitar notes and playful synth lines coalesce into an upbeat instrumental scene, the song glides with a mellow groove as pulsing bass tones carries the sound forward with laid back energy. Peppered with delicate melodic flashes and the steady patter of dusty drum snaps, it’s a superb jam that blends improvised ideas into a dreamy musical experience unlike any other.
By creating a sonic experience that channels the feeling of being submerged in another environment, fromtheswamp encourages listeners to become curious about the outside world as opposed to simply consuming another piece of music from inside it. The track’s optimism is therefore inseparable from its environmental consciousness, contributing to the wider vision of reintegrating humans with their surroundings, giving the song an emotional purpose that sits beneath its carefree surface.
It is a vision that also explains why fromtheswamp is difficult to place within any one particular genre, with the project taking familiar musical ideas and stitching them into something more personal, combining guitar-led inspiration with an experimental style and a fascination with the natural world. With “peaceful waters,” that philosophy becomes audible, presenting music that asks us to slow down, listen differently and perhaps remember what exists beyond the room we’re sitting in.
