Based in Tokyo, SATOSHI has developed an artistic language that lands somewhere in the overlap between intensity and stillness. Based in post rock and blackgaze, his music moves through contrasting extremes, drawing on classical music, sacred traditions and Japanese melodic stylings to create soundscapes that feel at once transportive and deeply intimate. Across a growing body of independent work, SATOSHI views music as a space for inner journeys, using texture, atmosphere and dynamics to explore the ethereal.
A sense of movement is central to the project and SATOSHI’s work flows between dark R&B, trip hop, post rock, post metal, blackgaze, drone metal, ambient and experimental electronic music. Atmospheric electronic production can give way to guitar-driven heaviness, while cinematic sound design, distorted textures, ancient influences and elements of world music continually reshape the surrounding landscape.
Despite the diversity of these influences, there’s an emotional thread running throughout his sonic fabric, where human fragility, sin, weakness and the instability of the self sit alongside an enduring sense of hope, particularly in moments marked by darkness and uncertainty. SATOSHI’s music finds its character in these contradictions, allowing beauty and dissonance, darkness and light, emotion and transcendence to form in the same space.
Restrained downtempo passages create room for atmosphere before dense, expansive walls of sound arrive with greater force but by not using heaviness for impact, SATOSHI builds immersive environments in which different emotional states can coalesce. Since linking up with Chis-A on “Embers” in May last year, SATOSHI has continued to develop that world through multiple well-received releases, while exploring cross-genre collaborations and new approaches to cinematic and alternative music.

Now, his release titled “Gelino” offers a particularly revealing showcase of his vision with a modern reinterpretation of a traditional song that track takes a folk-based melody and places it inside an expansive combination of ambient and experimental electronics, post rock dynamics and post metal impact. By deconstructing the musical ideas of the original, SATOSHI rebuilds it within a spacious, cinematic setting where the traditional character of the melody remains at the centre but its surroundings are entirely transformed.
Stacked electronic textures, atmospheric instrumentation and a gradually expanding arrangement give “Gelino” an enthralling scale, allowing inherited musical material to be brought to life in a completely different production environment. Brought in by the mellow sway of soft instrumental tones, the song glides with dreamy atmosphere as elegant vocal leads float in before layering up to craft an immersive soundscape. Developing with the chug of distorted guitar rhythms and patter of drums, the track gathers intensity which contrasts the delicate melodic ideas, creating a wholly absorbing listening experience unlike any other.
Reaching a driving finale of crunchy, metal-inflected aesthetic, the track surges to a powerful close, leaving a lasting impression of the song. “Gelino” ultimately sits in the space between world music, experimental music and atmospheric heavy music. It’s an epic collision of something traditional and something forward-thinking, showing how an enduring folk melody can be given new surroundings and for SATOSHI, it becomes another step in an exciting musical adventure that’s sure to win over listeners around the world.
