For several decades, Stephen H. Cumberbatch has viewed music less as an open-ended experiment and while recording under the name C’batch, the White Plains-based composer, producer, author and multi-instrumentalist has built a creative life around curiosity, independence and the simple act of following an idea wherever it might lead. Moving between guitars, keyboards, synths and samplers, his work takes cues from a wide musical terrain that includes smooth jazz, contemporary R&B, pop, electronic production, ambient textures and cinematic influences.
Independence has been central to C’batch’s work since 1984, when Stephen and Yvette Cumberbatch co-founded Stevette Music, Inc. The company gave him a platform from which to develop and release music according to his own vision, resulting in a musical ethos that’s continued to shape his work. As an established ASCAP member with decades of experience behind him, C’batch has maintained that same desire to explore, allowing advances in technology and changing musical landscapes to become opportunities as opposed to limitations.
As such, his music can shift direction from one piece to the next while retaining an underlying sense of purpose, reflecting an artist more interested in exploration than adhering to a single formula. That philosophy becomes particularly compelling through the ongoing Vault series. Drawing on material originally developed during the Unfinished Business era alongside C’batch & Herring, the series creates a dialogue between earlier musical ideas and contemporary production. By bringing unfinished compositions from the past into a modern musical setting, C’batch reconstructs and expands the material with modern technology and techniques.

That process of rediscovery is at the heart of “Our Little Pooh Pea (The Last Light) 4 – Cinematic,” the latest single lifted from the new EP Our Little Pooh Pea (The Last Light). The creative spark of the track comes from a guitar solo C’batch had originally played over another composition, “Round & Round.” When he returned to that performance, he heard possibilities beyond its original context and he placed the guitar work inside a completely new cinematic, electronic and atmospheric production.
That shift in tone transforms the role of the guitar; once part of one musical setting, the performance becomes the voice of an entirely different story, surrounded by textures that move the track towards a dazzling musical sphere. Set up by the flash of piano and gentle taps of drums, the intricate guitar leads enter with smooth melodic lines above the dreamy arrangement, stitching flashes of rock flair into a delicate soundscape. It’s an emotive, dreamlike instrumental outing that feels deliberately open, offering a transportive listening experience that’s truly impossible not to love.
The Last Light evokes the space between darkness and hope, but by not closing that space with a definitive interpretation, the track leaves room for listeners to create their own story. Its journey from an existing guitar performance to a new cinematic composition also captures the wider creative flair running through C’batch’s work, capturing enduring musical ideas in exciting new ways. With “Our Little Pooh Pea (The Last Light) 4 – Cinematic,” an old performance becomes a new possibility, showing how technology and imagination can transform unfinished or previously fomred ideas into something with an entirely different life.
