Coming out of Seattle, The Night and The Dirty have been making an impression in the Pacific Northwest music sphere, bringing together the familiar roots of folk and Americana with the atmospheric stylings of synthwave and pop. Fronted by Kelly McShane, the trio builds its sound around the unexpected interplay of analogue synths, banjos, gritty rhythms and immersive textures, creating music that’s at once cinematic and instilled with emotional context. With longtime friends Michael Waller and Jeremiah Robinson completing the lineup, the band has developed a collaborative vision that channels contrast, finding new possibilities where traditional songwriting overlaps with more experimental sonic areas.
Leading the project is Kelly, whose synesthesia informs his distinctive musical vision; raised in the Pacific Northwest, he experienced childhood loss and institutional care before finding refuge in music, an experience that provides a powerful backdrop to the band’s emotionally charged output. By not treating adversity as something to be hidden away, The Night and The Dirty distil difficult experiences into their creative expression, exploring the complicated feelings that can accompany personal history, relationships and change, resulting in music that draws from darker emotional landscapes while remaining open to the relief of reflection and release.
The trio’s chemistry has developed through years of working within the Pacific Northwest music scene, with Kelly’s commanding vocals gliding above Jeremiah’s inventive guitar work and Michael’s atmospheric keys, with a rotating selection of Seattle drummers often joining them. Each member brings their own compositional ideas to the process, allowing the band’s arrangements to arise from a shared creative conversation.
Recording at Behold The Mighty Hunter studios in Edmonds, Washington, they’ve gradually forged an aesthetic they describe as ‘Surf Drench,’ a sound that brings together subdued contemplation, country and folk traditions and the more unexpected presence of electronic textures. First unveiling that sound last year with the debut single “Heartland,” they’ve since shared a string of well-received tracks that have confirmed their status as a must watch band on the rise.

Now, their brand new single titled “Reflections” thematically frames the uncomfortable but necessary process of examining the past. Taking stock of personal faults is seldom straightforward, with lost love, the passing of a dear friend, changing circumstances, regrets and untruths all leaving memories that eschew any easy resolution. “Reflections” confronts these experiences directly, presenting an honest moment of self-examination with the band’s unique sound becoming a vehicle for that emotional reflection, bringing folk and synth-driven atmosphere together in a track designed to provide a sense of release.
Opened by the twinkle of airy instrumental tones, the gentle crash of drums ushers in plucked banjo notes and expressive vocal leads which hover above the layered arrangement, forming an engrossing soundscape that’s both sombre and tinged with uplifting tone. With bright melodic leads ringing out above the steady rhythmic punch of drums, twang of guitar and bubble of intricate instrumental elements, “Reflections” serves up an anthemic musical moment that’s engaging, memorable and poignant all at once. Putting their highly original sound and meaningful songwriting on full display, it’s an epic showcase of the band’s superb musical offering, laying down a listening experience that’s enjoyable and highly affecting in equal measure.
With thoughtful songwriting and musicianship panache, The Night and The Dirty once again deliver a stellar single that’s sure to win over new and existing listeners all over the world. With “Reflections,” The Night and The Dirty continue to build a musical world where tradition and innovation coalesce through unique creative expression and we can’t wait to see what else they’ve got in store on their exciting musical adventure.
