New York-based composer and recording artist Vidura Barrios has spent two decades exploring the relationship between music, meditation and inner awareness. As the founder of Inner Splendor Media, an independent music company established in 2006, he’s developed a body of work informed by contemplative practice, Sanskrit sacred music and the spiritual traditions of India. His compositions offer a space for meditation, relaxation, yoga and stillness, placing the experience of listening at the centre of a wider journey towards reconnection and self-awareness.
A longtime meditation practitioner and student of India’s ancient yogic tradition, Vidura views music as an artform capable of reaching beyond the purely auditory. Across numerous recordings released since the founding of Inner Splendor Media, he’s gathered an international audience drawn to music that encourages listeners to slow down and turn their attention towards something meaningful. His work encompasses mantra chanting, meditation music, nature sounds and relaxing soundscapes, exploring different ways that sound can support contemplation while creating an atmosphere of calm.
Stillness is only one aspect of his musical identity however, as Vidura also recognises the capacity for devotional music to inspire movement, collective participation and celebration. That more expressive dimension comes into focus on his latest release titled “Shiva Shambho Kirtan,” a rhythm-driven composition that brings the traditional Indian practice of kirtan into a modern world-music setting. Featuring organic instrumentation and vocals, the track combines an original composition by Vidura with production and arrangement by Kento Tachibana, creating a colourful interpretation of a devotional tradition with a long-term spiritual purpose.

Kirtan centres on the singing and repetition of the names of the Divine, transforming chanting into a shared musical experience but the practice is not intended solely for quiet reflection, as “Shiva Shambho Kirtan” embraces its communal qualities, inviting listeners to join in the singing and experience the sense of joy that repetition can bring. Its focus is the Hindu deity Shiva, celebrated through the names Śaṅkara, Hara and Śambho, each carrying its own significance within the chant.
These names provide the composition with a deeper meaning beyond its rhythmic energy, with Śaṅkara referring to the one who brings auspiciousness or well-being, while Hara represents the remover, associated with the removal of suffering and the obstacles that obscure a person’s deeper nature. Śambho invokes Shiva as the source of happiness and bliss and together, these names express a movement from removing what stands in the way towards welcoming greater well-being and joy.
Set up by the soft taps of percussion, the song slips into a hypnotic scene of gentle rhythmic flow and chanted vocals which layer up in moments of choral bliss while the twang of instrumentation provides intricate melodic details throughout. Once again showcasing Vidura’s incredible command of repetition and gradual sonic development to form an engrossing musical experience, “Shiva Shambho Kirtan” presents a stunning display of music that’s at once engaging, deeply meaningful and sure to stand the test of time.
Where his recent album Chant! explores the different emotional possibilities of mantra and meditation, “Shiva Shambho Kirtan” places collective joy firmly in the foreground. Its contemporary world-music approach offers an accessible entry point into an ancient devotional practice, while the meaning of its repeated names provides a deeper layer of connection. This combination of spiritual meaning and musical accessibility reflects Vidura’s wider musical vision, captured via work that draws on traditional practices while allowing room for modern arrangements, creating recordings that remain connected to their devotional origins.
