nomoon is a musical project focused on the strong emotions that emanate from that simple city life, the things that threaten to destabilise us for better or worse and encourage us to grow. It began to evolve into a project for the people, the common voice of experience. “The music is what happens in the gaps, and aims at expressing the beauty and brokenness of what it is to be a human being,” nomoon producer Jamie offers.
The duo’s other half, vocalist and guitarist Matt started out in folk and indie bands, whilst Jamie grew up producing hip-hop and electronic music. Inspired by the likes of Bon Iver, Dominic Fike, and Jai Paul, this results in beat-driven emotional soundscapes, a fusion of Matt’s folk and Jamie’s hip hop, pop, and electronic sentimentalities.
There is parallelism here too. Both artists are inspired by novels and films that take focus on the complications, heartaches, traumas, and lessons that come with living a for want of a better word, ‘normal’ life, such as Normal People (Sally Rooney), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Life (Charlie Kaufman) and This is England (Shane Meadows).
With nomoon, Jamie and Matt hope to create a soundtrack for other people’s lives and experiences. Providing catharsis and context to experiences, especially more challenging moments, through self-expression and openness.
Born out of the space to reflect and express during the 2020 lockdown, the pair experienced a boom of creativity, announcing the release date for their debut EP Cycles and revealing the new single “These Experiences” – a blissful piece that weaves a dreamy soundscape of indie electronica.
The Cycles EP is a visceral and personal introduction to the nomoon project, exploring the idea that ‘normal’ life is constantly evolving, confusing, beautiful, and scary, all in one mess of liveliness. There are ups and downs, joys and pains, and expressing these moments with honesty can help us process and feel less alone.
Following their recent singles “Masks”, and “Sands”, comes “Dust Room” and “These Experiences”, rounding off a touching, emotionally charged debut that channels honesty, and vulnerability, culminating in a self-described ‘cathartic experience.’
These Experiences – the final single taken from the EP – came together after the discovery of the Human Podcast by Jess Mills. The song samples a clip from an episode, with guest Clover Stroud, named ‘The Agony and Ecstasy of Loss.’
Commenting on the new track, they share, “It resonated in lockdown with both the loss of freedoms and the much more painful, close to home losses of much loved people. The song is a journey through that grief with both sad and hopeful moments, with Jess Mill’s words at the centre becoming the mantra that ties it all together.
