Singer-songwriter and bedroom producer Joseph Marcus creates music that’s distinctively soulful, with a voice reminiscent of 00’s R&B that is instantly recognisable, his sound is formed through a blend of classic pop song-writing and contemporary electronic production, injected heavily with R&B and Art Pop influences.
Since his debut, he’s already worked with established producers such as SG Lewis and Phairo (Bruno Major, Eliza, Liv Dawson), and respected songwriters in the pop sphere including The Six and Sophie Cooke (Frances). Furthermore, in live shows Joseph has supported rising names such as Tom Walker and James Vickery.
Writing songs on the piano from the age of 12, Joseph has drawn from a diverse web of musical influences from the likes of Neo-Soul staples Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild to art-pop innovators such as Imogen Heap and Björk, to create music spanning the realms of both R&B and Pop.
Now the artist brings us a track, “Night Terrors”, the final single from his latest album In This Room Alone. The single is a dark and brooding R&B outing featuring silky vocal work over a rolling beat demonstrating Joseph Marcus’ songwriting panache and ability to craft truly original music.
Commenting on the new track, the artist offers, “Night Terrors is about my relationship with fear over the course of my life. I wanted to explore a saying that goes something like: Fearlessness is not the absence of fear. It’s the mastery of fear. I believe all of our ‘negative’ emotions are unavoidable, so it’s better to become in tune with them and learn to welcome them.”
Continuing, “I suffered nightmares and night terrors almost every night when I was a child, and in the song I relate that experience to what I fear now as a grown adult. There are questions I raise throughout the song like ‘why do I pretend I have control over things I don’t?’ and ‘why do I self sabotage?’ and the answer to each one is fear. Now that I’m older and I’ve realised that the root of all these negative and destructive feelings is fear, I can choose to look past it and see if fear is worth stopping me in my tracks, or even exploit the feeling of fear for my own enjoyment.”
