London-based singer-songwriter Joseph Giffard Tutt brings us the new single from his ensemble The White Russian. Influenced by the likes of Bill Callahan, Bright Eyes and Grizzly Bear as well as acts such as The Beta Band and Neutral Milk Hotel, The White Russian offers their own delicate sound of thoughtfully written Lo-fi Folk music.
Already established as a live act and now one of the recent signings to the brand new Hummus Music Publishing, the band have performed alongside artists such as Lyla Foy, Goldheart Assembly and The Turbans. Following the release of their debut single “B Child”, which saw the outfit gain new fans and catch the eyes of tastemakers in the UK, they return with the follow up track “Cancer Knee” ahead of their upcoming debut EP set to drop in the spring.
Produced by engineer Iain Berryman, who’s previous credits include Florence and the Machine, Kings of Leon and Arcade Fire, capturing the feel of live performance was key to recording The White Russian, with all of the main instruments playing along the same room in a single take.
On “Cancer Knee”, the group offer a poignant sound of whimsical downbeat folk furthered with a latin jazz rhythm. Leader Joseph’s accomplished writing talents are apparent, with his influence of bands that transcend simple bedroom melancholia and successfully incorporated far wider musical views ringing clear his own music.
Commenting on the track, Joseph explains, “This song was actually written in the delirium of a fever, however that day I felt like I was able to click into some form of being philosophical about the condition and let my artistic curiosity take over.”
