Edinburgh-based indie outfit Sons of the Descent comprise of Ian White, of Factory Records band The Wendys, Hugh Duggie of Mute’s Foil and Scottish shoegaze band Lowlife, and electro-tech Stephen Evans, known on his own as Bendy Toy.
Releasing a string of singles over the last few years as well as the 2017 debut album Lazy Glamour, the trio have gained radio support with regular spins from BBC 6 Music’s Gideon Coe. Using guitar, electronics and voices they meld experiences and encounters to create their own unique sound of pop-tinged noir.
Usually a staple of the live music scene, their show profile has been hit hard by the current pandemic. However, while looking ahead to reconnecting with audiences in the near future, they’ve taken the time away to release live ‘lockdown’ versions of older singles and spent time working on their second album which already promises to be wide ranging in emotional scale and musical texture.
Now they return with the latest release, the single “Salaryman”, released via the Brawsome Productions imprint. Straying from their usual upbeat and riff-driven style they venture down a melancholic route to explore loss, love and redemption on their latest offering.
Tender and melodic vocals pair with quirky upbeat electro pulses and twangy 12-string guitar to create a dreamy spaced-out indie sound. “Salaryman” offers a window into the life of a band that’s maturing and becoming more confident in their sound while also exploring new avenues of sonic expression.
