Sing-songwriter SamHandy hails from Reading, UK and fills out his sound with the help of musicians Ted Hayes on Piano, Allan Penford on Bass and Ed Stokes on production duties. Together they create an upbeat and grooving indie pop sound influenced by the likes of Bruno Mars, John Mayer and D’Angelo.
Sam Handy sets himself apart in the pop charts by keeping his focus on instrumental ability and songwriting, with minimal production, to give his sound an all-consuming live feel. His narratively sniping lyrics and old-school blues pop vocals sit perfectly above the vibrant neo-soul jam of the music’s instrumentation.
Since making his debut, Sam Handy has delivered stellar hit after stellar hit, gaining him new fans and high praise from Jeff Beck. Now he returns with his latest release, the new single “Done” recorded in a studio near Farnborough.
Commenting on the track, he offers, “I took a lot of inspiration from the neo-soul genre for this song. Artists like D’Angelo inspired a lot of my melodies and vocal harmonies. I loved the laid back tones but with that serious attitude. That ‘back off’ message without a lot of the hostility.”
Continuing, “I had a means to funnel a lot of disappointment which was flowing through me at the time, and it was through this sound I could communicate it. It felt healthier and easier to get over this chapter of my life, instead of bottling it up and drinking it away.”
Offering a contrast between joyful and lively sound and impassioned lyrical exasperation, the new single perfectly captures Sam Handy’s brand of soulful pop. A fierce and honest song with a laid back feel, “Done” is a resounding middle-finger to toxic relationships and selfish individuals.
Sam adds, “We’re too busy getting caught up in producing content, writing music and trying to make it, and a lot of life passes us by. The irony is that music reflects our real lives, so what kind of music are we writing if we’re not
really living?”
