Hailing from the city of Chennai, in the Bay of Bengal in the East of India are Jazz Rock Quartet Jatayu. The band weaves together traditional Carnatic music of their homeland with elements of Jazz, Rock, and Funk, to fuse together a fresh sound of contemporary music that nods back to their roots.
Offering a reflection of modern India, they compose music that’s rooted in a centuries old art form, yet current and collaborative in approach and sonic fabric. With their music, the old collides with the new as age old instrumentation flutters through current off-beat rhythmic jazz arrangements.
Now the band returns with their latest single “Restless”, linking up with Harini Iyer who provides vocal flair and Praveen Sparsh on mridangam. Their latest release is about self-discovery, introspection and growth that brings in the vocal prowess of Harini and the hypnotic mridangam expertise of Praveen to take the listener on a journey.
Hypnotic and mesmerising, with “Restless” they lay down a truly original piece that perfectly pairs the musicianship of jazz and rock with the sensibilities of the traditional music of their ancestors to create something that’s entirely new.
With this release, Jatayu aims to further its goal of collaborating with artists from around the world to create a sonic texture that is always evolving. In celebration of the new release, Jatayu will be embarking on an India tour, performing live across five cities over two months.
