A act that offers an entirely new sound, Sonic Winter create their own style of hypnotic tip hop that oozes originality. Embracing the unusual and enigmatic, they deliver rhythmically-charged compositions full of piquant instrumentation and vocal work.
Originally formed in 2012, this French-Scottish-Brazilian-Swedish artist collective is at its core a duo comprised of guitarist Jean-Marc Millière and keyboardist Francis Girola. Yet, all of their projects feature a variety of talented musicians from all around the globe and stem from highly diverse musical horizons.
With an equally varied repertoire, they consistently strive to break free of any genre-defined chains, fusing rock, soul, blues, hip-hop and electronica styles in their sound. Entirely unafraid to create something new, they bravely stride into uncharted waters to take listeners on an always surprising voyage of discovery.
Attracting significant recognition, they were handpicked by electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre to be featured on a tribute album titled Zoolook Revisited. The project was part of a music contest organised by Soundhunters.
Following a glistening catalogue of singles and albums, they now bring us their latest release, with the track “Never Bet The Devil Your Head”. Borrowing its title from a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, the new track is a tribute to blues legend Robert Johnson. It tells the story of an artist’s day of reckoning; after selling his soul in exchange for musical genius, time has come to pay the devil his due.
With a beat-laden arrangement of mesmerising guitar and piano work, colourful synth lines and deep blues vocals, the track is a sonic metaphor for liberation – uplifting, yet with a pinch of melancholy. With “Never Bet The Devil Your Head”, they deliver a trippy kaleidoscopic piece that both challenges and intrigues.
Paired with the music is the visual artwork from illustrator Charlie Padgett, furthering an artistic collision between what’s heard and what’s seen that Sonic Winter have constantly pushed.
