Salt Lake City project Ngels (pronounced ‘angels’) is the solo musical endeavour of Tyler Godfrey who links up with Clint Holgate on production and co-writing. The artist creates glistening electro psych-pop music that’s both grooving and infectiously catchy.
Originally venturing out as a solo artist called James Allen Spirit, he dropped a self-titled debut with Nate Pyfer (Kaskade, The Moth and the Flame) and took to the road playing slots up and down the West coast. Growing tired of the LA scene, he then re-emerged as Ngels with a debut album, Consequences, that saw him expertly blend shoegaze with a shining modern sound full of commercial appeal.
Recorded between Salt Lake City and southern California, Ngels enlisted the talents of drummer Andrew Toleman (Imagine Dragons), vocalist Brittany Toleman (Imagine Dragons, Mount Saint) and bassist Drew Beck (Mondo Cozmo). Commenting on the album, he offers, “I wouldn’t say it’s a break-up record, necessarily. But it has to do with addiction and losing a relationship in the process of recovery.”
Following on from the album, he brings us the new single “What You Wanted”, a rhythm-centric electronic pop effort full of piquant melodic writing and exquisite instrumentation arrangement. Accompanying the new track is a music video to perfectly capture the song in the moving image, full of smoky visual atmosphere, dripping in kaleidoscopic scenes and red vibes.
