Born and raised in Hong Kong, the now Ireland-based Hip Hop artist My Twisted Heart is the brainchild of Po Ki Ching, who offers a strikingly modern sound of glitching beat-driven electronic soundscapes with spliced vocal lines and rapped bars. The genre-beating musician draws on his own experiences, reflecting on relationships, weaving the dynamics of life through his lens into his music.
Growing up listening to canton pop, j-rock, and k-rock he developed an early passion for music with his creativity then blossoming when he met fellow Cork creatives Outsider YP and Kestine, with whom he formed the ‘Outsiders’ creative collective. With exposure to Western music genres such as Hip-Hop, Electronic and R&B, he began to blur the lines between contrasting longitudinal influences.
He has gone onto collaborate extensively as part of ‘Outsiders’, contributing to their output over the course of the past few years, culminating now in an upcoming slew of single releases, and the highly anticipated Heart Leak EP.
Lifted from the new EP comes the opening track “idontneedyou”, a song penned to explore the pain of having to leave someone – or someplace – behind, in order to take care of yourself. Linking with Outsider YP on the single, the pair deliver a deeply punching emo rap piece.
Commenting on the track, the artist shares, “On the surface, this song is about an individual who feels trapped in a relationship and wants breathing space. But it has another meaning to me. It reflects my feeling towards Hong Kong – where I grew up, and where injustice was and is still happening.”
