David Baron is a producer, film composer, musician, arranger and engineer, appropriately located in historic Woodstock, NY area. He’s had a glittering career in the music industry that’s seen him work with the likes of The Lumineers, Shania Twain, Jade Bird, Vance Joy, Meghan Trainor, Lenny Kravitz, Bat For Lashes, Four Tet and many other global artists.
As an avid collector of vintage analog synthesisers and recording gear, he crafts his own music in his private recording studio, Sun Mountain, located on top of a mountain overlooking the Ashokan Reservoir.
Blending the retro and the modern, the orchestrated and the raw, he draws on his vast musical knowledge and experience to create a sonic contrast that brings out the emotion of a scene or in a song.
Following the 2020 album Whisperers, he’s now returned with another full length body of work with Nagra Piano, released via Here & Now Recordings. A deep and expansive collection of music, he delivers on his unique melancholic baroque style and demonstrates not only his expert abilities as a composer but also as a deft musician and performer.
Commenting on the creation of the album, he offers, “In early 2021 the pandemic had stretched on for about a year. I had spent a lot of the last year working with computers, zoom, Pro Tools, the internet. Endless screens. Cursors. Digital life. I would sit down at my Steinway B at night. The stars would come out. I would disengage from the world of technology and enter the purely musical fantasy world. It felt like a return to how I learned to love music originally when my parents first brought home a piano. The excitement of discovery. I decided to record my pieces directly without adornment.”
Continuing, “The Nagra 4s analog tape recorder is self-contained. No screens. High technology from the early seventies. Put on a reel of fresh tape and record. I placed two Neumann M49 tube microphones in front of the Steinway B and plugged them directly into the Nagra. No eq or added effects. No edits. No added reverb. Mics to tape. I set out to make music that sounds free, emotional, and magical. It was a joy to record. A unmanipulated snapshot of time.”
