Dubbed “Britain’s Answer to Taylor Swift” by The Daily Mail, Mariella Frostrup on Times Radio and the legendary Brad Paisley, St Ives-based artist Bailey Tomkinson has been making waves in the music UK music scene. When she’s not writing or performing on the ‘Kernowfornia’ music scene, she’s often found surfing on Porthmeor Beach in Cornwall.
Influenced by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Carole King and Weezer, she offers a sound which fuses surf rock, americana and pop to create hook-driven music that’s gained her attention from fans and tastemakers alike as well as success in the charts with her releases. With her song “Bright Red” she was featured by The Times, with the track being shared as a rallying cry for sustainability and social justic ahead of the last G7 summit in her home town.
Now the unsigned artist brings us her latest offering with the new single “Skin”, a song that represents something of an evolution in her sound. Taking the track in a nu-folk direction, it soundtracks the shift of a relationship about how a friend changed into somebody she no longer felt an affinity with.
On “Skin”, a delicate acoustic arrangement gives her vocals room to soar on a beautifully crafted song that confirms the hype around her. On the track, she shares, “Many of my songs have tended to be about a couple breaking up or unrequited love in some way, but I’ve always felt that, my female relationships are incredibly important in my life, so I wanted to explore the break up of one of those with Skin.”
Adding, “Changing the focus and perspective of the subject matter also empowered me to play more with the sound.”
