Hailing from Oakland, four piece rock band Strangelight is formed by Ian Miller on bass, Julia Lancer on drums and both Nat Coghlan and Tony Teixeira on guitars and vocals. Starting out as a side project ten years ago when Nat and Julia met while on tour with different bands. The idea was bron to create a no-frills rock and roll outfit that ignored the revival rock movement of the time to focus on the pure energy in their music.
Initially working on demos as a duo, after a few rehearsals they recruited Ian and Tony to complete their line up. As a band, their main influences include Hot Snakes, Wipers and The Nerves and get their gritty high-octane punk sound with a strictly downstroke playing style, pumped through low wattage amps with tube rectifiers.
Taking their sound to the stage, they’ve played shows alongside the likes of The Body, Uniform, Curl Up And Die, Dreamdecay, and Radioactivity, unleashing their raw and energetic sound upon audiences across America.
Now they bring us their latest release with the EP The World Needs Laughter. The EP follows the release of their debut full length, Adult Themes, which was recorded days before California went into lockdown. After a stretch of not seeing each other, as soon as they were allowed back into their practice space, they began working on the riffs that make up the four tracks on The World Needs Laughter EP.
Full to the brim with nervous energy the new EP was inspired by the pandemic and the anxiety and monotony it brought with it. Offering a frantic and powerful sound, on The World Needs Laughter they showcase the best of their sound.
Commenting on the release, vocalist and guitarist Nat Coghlan offers, “I don’t think ‘anxiety’ is a genre of music, but if it was, this would be it. These songs capture the feeling of bouncing between the abject terror and the mind-erasing monotony that is having a front row seat to the end of history.”
