Nashville alt-rock, indie pop, dance four-piece The Thing With Feathers is formed by singer and guitarist David Welcsh, bassist Sean Carroll, lead guitarist Alex Hendricks and Chris Roussell on drums.
Influenced by the likes of Coldplay, the 1975, and The Strokes, The Thing With Feathers offer a distinctive flavour of hook-driven guitar-based music that’s won them adoration from fans both near and far with their captivating live shows and studio releases. Due to the pandemic, their live performance efforts were put on hold, but with that hiatus, came a chance for the band to focus on their recorded music; retreating to the studio to work on the collection of tracks for their debut EP.
With the EP, titled Sundays in the South, they deliver their five track introduction, showcasing their infectiously catchy brand of melodic indie rock. Produced by Owen Lewis, whose credits include Old Sea Brigade and Snow Patrol, on Sundays in the South they fuse the grit of rock, the energy of dance and the commercial appeal of pop to push the boundaries of indie music on a career-defining release which shows why they’re worth the hype.
With the second single on the EP, “Lights Down Low”, they share a music video directed by Hannah Gray Hall.
Commenting on the context behind the lyrics for the single (lights down low), the band’s founder and frontman Dave Welcsh shares that it, “…tells the events of a fast and dangerous relationship that started in a smoke filled bar. [The song is about] two characters’ rebellion against the whitewashed ideologies of southern Christian culture.”
Adding, “The song is centred around a bass riff and has an overall darker tone, something we were eager to play around with after writing songs that were bright and pop-forward.”
Following it up, the ever-evolving band dropped another music video, once again linking with Hannah Gary Hall to add her visual flair this time to the EP’s title track single “Sundays in the South”.
