Depression, Mom is the Philadelphia-based duo formed by multi-instrumentalists Max Church and Luke Sperber who play guitar, piano, bass, ukulele and drums. Meeting by chance on the first day of college at Washington University in St. Louis when they happened to be paired as roommates, they instantly clicked and their musical partnership was born.
Drawing influence from a wide array of artists such as Mac Miller, Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, The Rolling Stones, Grey, Bruno Mars and many others, they strive to create genre-bending music that’s both melodically catchy and filled will hidden easter eggs in the lyrical writing. As a brand new act, they’ve not been able to play any live shows of note yet, instead focusing their time on writing, producing and starting to release their recorded music.
Recently they dropped one of their first offerings, with the new single “Once In California”. Inspired by music from the 60s like Phil Spector and The Lawrence Welk Show, Depression, Mom’s new track was produced by Nick Krill, whose credits include War on Drugs, Dove and the Wolf and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
Recorded in their dorm room studio over the course of a week in between time spent in class, it captures a sense of nostalgia in its dreamy pop style tones. Upbeat and catchy, “Once In California” is a statement from a band that has a lot to offer, not just in their varied instrumental abilities but also in their penchant for writing hook-filled music.
Commenting on the track, they offer, “This song is for the people who need to learn to let go! If you feel like you are trapped, take a step back, and figure out what is best for you.”
