Originally hailing from Belgium, it was in the city of London where singer-songwriter Diego Philips set out on his musical journey. Five years ago he began performing in the UK capital with his band and immediately made a name for himself with his unique brand of indie folk music carried by his smooth vocal work and intricate writing.
Drawing influence from the likes of Michael Kiwanuka , Damien Rice, Leonard Cohen and Devendra Banhart, Diego Philips holds story-telling at the heart of his writing. With heartfelt poetry and sinciere sentiments, he weaves delicate imagery through his lyric-focused music that centres on love, sadness and spirituality as main themes.
With his previous releases, such as his albums Burning Pieces and Tides released in 2014 and 2020 respectively, he’s received critical acclaim and won over fans in the UK and beyond. A keen performer, he’s graced iconic London venues including The Saatchi Gallery and The Dublin Castle in Camden, spreading his warmth and music around the city. “Music is a refuge, a space to bring people together as a community. It is something that anyone can identify with,” he shares.
Now he brings us his latest full-length, a concept album titled I Am Yuki: The Hiroshima Project. Continuing his trend of spinning vivid stories into his compositions, the new album recounts the story of a young boy that goes through the bombings of Hiroshima in 1945. Across his new release, that’s been four years in the making, he lays down his beautiful vocal work on a captivating collection of work that flows freely between delicate folk styles to more energetic indie rock energies.
