On the 20th November, Old Blue Last in London will see the live debut of ‘Tell Me Again’, the new track from the Liverpool five piece band ‘Gulf’, though you can listen to it on the bands SoundCloud Page now. On first listen, the track is just as alluring as the bands previous track ‘Emitter’ which plasticmag also reviewed here, making a comparison to Tame Impala; a comparison still relevant in this track.
The band describe themselves as “pop in swirling technicolour”, which is a viewpoint I found myself sharing despite having only looked at that mesmerising artwork at the time. They still seem to be on a different level genre wise, which makes their music so special, a bit like when Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr formed alternative dance supergroup ‘Electronic’ – something completely different, that works so well.
The track is more ‘Upbeat’ than first track ‘Emitter’, and is not only premiering on DIY, but is following in the footsteps of ‘Emitter’ by featuring in NME’s ‘Top 20 Tracks Of The Week’, as well going one step further and appearing on ‘The Guardian’ playlist.
Jones’ vocals are as smooth as ever, with the lyrics on par, the drum beat is smashing, and the combination of 3 talented guitarists works perfectly. The band have said on more on one occasion that when it comes to having more than one guitarists, it’s all about experimentation, and it appears to me in their two psychedelic masterpieces that their experimentations couldn’t be any better.
With the success of the bands first 2 tracks, including how well they’ve been received, it looks like ‘Gulf’ are one to watch out for, and if you can catch them live, it’d certainly be special.
