Tony Yang, going by the stage name PaprTape, is a Brooklyn-based producer and musician who makes music in various genres that combines traditional and modern techniques.
He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and started with the violin and piano at the age of 6. He traveled back and forth between the U.S. and Taiwan as a child, learning music with various teachers, and also studied with Khuillip Jeung from The Juilliard School.
As an artist and composer, PaprTape works with analog synths and tape machines to create warm ambient sounds and textures, and he often combines acoustic and electronic instruments to create melodies that are familiar yet new to the audience. His work has been showcased with major brands and artists including Burberry, Marshall Headphones, Philip Glass, Fung Bros and many more.
With everything happening in the world, PaprTape spent his last day of snow in solitude in his Brooklyn apartment recording his new piece. The resulting work is the track “Wintry”, a delicate and warm analog synthesised composition.
It starts with the warm chords from his analog synth, creating an orchestra pad-like sound in 5th intervals that adds a flute-like texture. The ambient reverb portrays the wintery snow, as the wind flows and hits his window. The piece was recorded on reel to reel tape in one take, and the imperfections and light distortions of the recording give the listener the feelings of a live performance.
Commenting on the piece, he offers,“Everything seems so mechanical and aligned exactly on the beat these days. I really miss going to a concert where these slight imperfections make the music more human.”
The arrangement offers a soothing ambient expression of minimalism. Both calming and intriguing, “Wintry” demonstrates the artist’s ability to create dreamy textures and a complete control over his instrument.
