ABOUT
Berlin-based artist Kalipo made a name for himself as the producer and band member of the German electro punk outfit Frittenbude for which he has produced five albums. The music he makes as Kalipo – the curious name came to him under the shower one day – goes into a different and less wild musical direction, situated between his passion for Downbeat and raving dance music.
After his Ki Records 2019 debut album, Space Bob, the electronic music producer announces his new album, to be released on 11th June. Inspired by the iconic 80s painter and TV host, Bob Ross, Happy Little Accidents is an uncomplicated optimistic sonic journey – and therein lies its allure.
“For me this album was about letting the songs develop very quickly and not evaluating them too much, or trying to avoid mistakes,” Kalipo says, who named his latest release after Ross’ signature phrase. Dance and self-expression are a big part of the album with many of its tracks inducing involuntary smiles and toe-taps.
Bob Ross, the iconic 80s painter and TV host is celebrated for his thirty-minute landscapes, soothing voice as well as the “happy little quotes” he imprinted on pop culture. One of Ross’ most memorable turns of phrase, “We don’t make mistakes; we just have happy accidents,” went on to encourage thousands worldwide.
And not just painters. “Bob Ross really impressed me as a child, he was always so accessible to everyone and demonstrated how easy it was for anyone to work creatively,” says Kalipo, who translated Ross’ fast and instinctive wet-on-wet painting technique to music-making on Happy Little Accidents.
Released via via Ki Records, “Footsteps”, the album’s first single, is likely to become a club classic. Together with famed Berlin producer Rampue, Kalipo brings playfulness and a little bit of drama to the euphoric track. Pop-infused layers, nu-disco soundscapes, and classic house beats – it’s all in “Footsteps”, begging listeners to move their bodies.
The collaboration offers Kalipo’s carefree style of groove paired with downtempo vocal work and and upbeat staccato string arrangement. Plucking guitar work throughout threads a common rhythm, allowing the beat to deliver a truly foot-tapping, head bobbing sound on this worthy dance sound.
