London-based Japanese producer Anchorsong shares his new single “New World”, an uplifting sonic expedition from the highly-fêted artist. The track follows on from the Tunisia-capital inspired single “Tunis Dream”. Both tracks harness Anchorsong’s idiosyncratic amalgam of shoegaze, ambient, and supple hip-hop grooves, and form part of the artist’s anticipated fourth album Mirage.
Touring internationally, as a solo artist and with his string quartet, Anchorsong has supported acts such as Bonobo, Portico Quartet and DJ Krush, performing at prestigious venues including Queen Elizabeth Hall and Camden Roundhouse, and a host of festivals like Glastonbury, Shambala, and Low-End Theory.
Anchorsong has been supported by a long list of tastemakers including Gilles Peterson, Elton John and Craig Smith, with career highlights involving performing at Worldwide Festival, hosting a guest NTS show, taking on the challenge of FACT Mag’s ‘Against The Clock’ and Red Bull’s ‘60 Seconds Solo’, plus sets for Boiler Room and BBC 6Music Festival.
Commenting on “New World”, the artist says: “I originally intended to make something very calm and melancholic with the opening chorus, however it ended up becoming one of the most uplifting tracks on the album. It’s the closing song also, as it feels like the end of a journey, which only leads to another one.“
On Mirage, the MPC wizard presents a record that evokes hazy soundscapes constructed with wind instrumentals, choirs, and global sonic particles – all key parts of the lead-single. Building on Anchorsong’s long-standing tradition of ‘borderless music’, the album fuses intricate rhythms with minimal yet immersive lush interplays of sound, to create an auditory odyssey.
Mirage marks a departure from Anchorsong’s previous two albums – Ceremonial and Cohesion – specific geographical references. Instead, the album which, was half-written during lockdown and during a time when nobody could travel, sees Anchorsong internalise his global influences and worldview to conjure a “vague landscape that only exists in my mind”.
“I let my imagination run wild and thought of places I’ve never been to. The tracks that came out of this process, diversified the tones and colour of the record further. I hope it takes a listener on the journey I experienced when creating it.”
With his new track, Anchorsong drops a rhythm-driven sound full of colourful and light melodic work brought forward via a piquant instrumentation arrangement. Uplifting and grooving, the album’s closing “New World” delivers a cheerful jam.
