With their backgrounds in classical and experimental music and art design, Elisa and Vittoria joined forces in March 2020, just before the lockdown hit Italy, to form Trust The Mask. They started producing music from afar and then joined in the studio last summer. Their music is all about changing identities, singing about what’s behind the thousand mask we wear everyday.
Now the newly formed Italian alt-pop duo bring us their debut single, “Cloudy Again” having started the band in March 2020, a few days before the lockdown. Their first release is bittersweet song about a breakup. Their music, as their name also suggests, hides different, changing, fluid identities. Their imagery starts from Aurora’s sounds to touch more experimental worlds, thanks also to the use of organic instruments, African flutes and modular synths.
Commenting on the track, they offer, “Cloudy Again is a song born twice, in two different rooms, by two mothers. First bloomed the title, during those social distanced days, which later gave birth to every aspect of the song. Then came the instrumental core, where a gentle Kantele, a string instruments from the Baltic area, tries to sooth those solitudes’ greyness.”
Continuing, “The lyric grew as last. It’s a comparison of those imposed detentions to the end of a relationship, to the deterioration of a vibrant love which ended up betraying any expectation. Despite everything, finally Cloudy Again came to light and in the end its message is one and only: hope, after the storm’s last drop.”
Delicate vocal work sits atop a mix of sustained synth lines and exotic staccato instrumentation. Both euphoric and reflective, the track delivers the first taste of this new artist’s sound.
