Following a string of highly experimental releases, Luke Petruzzi has been honing his sound into unique electronic music that feels as relatable as it does intangible. Petruzzi’s music is derived from a distinctive blend of musical influences, which tend to feature his soulful vocal performance, prominent vocal sampling techniques, and a rolling, trap-inspired rhythm.
Diverse artists such as Four Tet, James Blake, and TroyBoi have coloured Luke Petruzzi’s sonic palette. Though his music takes on a form of its own, he says artists like these “show me what a joy it is to take risks and feel my way through the creative process, as opposed to writing with a structure in mind.”
Producing music out of his studio apartment in San Francisco, California, Petruzzi surrounds himself with synthesisers and drum machines. Recording new sounds and ideas is his daily meditation.
With his latest single, Petruzzi’s distinctive blend of musical influences shines in “I Lost You”, which features his soulful vocal performance, prominent vocal sample shots, and a rolling trap-inspired rhythm.
Commenting on the new track, he offers, “I Lost You is about the cycle of remembering and forgetting our connection to oneness with the universe. Remembering that our personality and personal story are only one level of our existence – everybody is all at once a person, a timeless soul, pure energy – it just depends how we’re looking at it. At times where we get lost in the dramas of everyday life, it helps to remember that it isn’t so serious, and everything is part of something much greater.”
Adding, “I created the song on a day I was feeling a little lost and without love. I was in an airport waiting for a flight, and opened my laptop to a session I had started a while back with guitar and some sparse drums. I layered an idea for the vocal samples and began writing lyrics about that lost feeling of connection, and the song was born.”
