KIDSØ is the Munich-based combined talent of two friends, Moritz Grassinger and Martin Schneider, who have both been tinkering with electronic music and percussion instruments since they were youngsters. Moritz was tweaking electronic sounds on his Amiga as early as the 90’s, navigating 4 tones, 8 bit and 1MB memory, taped on an 8 channel cassette multitrack recorder.
Their dynamic live shows consist of instruments such as drums, analogue synthesisers and guitars. On stage, they see the laptop not just as a tool to playback songs, but a device to route the instruments through and shape new sounds in real-time. Live sets differ from show to show, allowing the band to improvise and react to emotions by reassembling the pieces of their set to something completely new and unique each time.
With a sound focused primarily around percussion, felt pianos, strings such as cello and viola, analogue synths, and electronic drums, they craft dreamy downtempo soundscapes. Influenced by acts such as Christian Löffler and KÓlafur Arnalds, their rhythmic beats draw parallels to the compositions of Parra for Cuva or Rival Consoles, blended with elements of fragility akin to the work of Kiasmos.
Now the pair bring us their latest release “Finja”, a track recorded and produced in their studio based in their hometown Munich. Together with their friend Philipp they created the empathetic and fragile cello melodies of the track. Always with the chill and frosty Nordic landscapes on their minds. The track further bases on choral vocals, analog synthesisers, percussions and a foley piano.
The beautiful surrealistic music video was created by French visual directors and brothers Swann and Yoann Chesnel from thanksbro. They created these stunning scenes out of photos they’ve collected while travelling all over the world.
Commenting on the video, the visual artist brothers offer, “It’s time to escape, to leave far away from our daily lives and to lose track of time. We are inviting you to a soft, light and surrealist journey around the world we are living in.”
The name Finja is derived from a location close to a Swedish lake giving lots of inspiration to Moritz and Martin. Finja is the first single of the forthcoming album Fir set for release on March 18th, 2022 via Embassy of Music who’ve released work from Monolink and David Guetta.
On their new track, KIDSØ say, “The title Finja is based on a Nordic woman’s name and begins with faint but emotional vocals. We tried to work a fragile feeling and restraint silence into the track, symbolizing the lonely setting we all are into at the moment with the pandemic situation.”
Adding, “The tension and contrast within the track is build up on the driving and strong percussions and its baseline. The track later shifts even more into its rhythms and drifting baseline. The cello and its melody derived out of some jam sessions with our friend Philipp, who later records even more strings and instruments on the album.”
