Ohio-based producer Fang Su brings us his debut instrumental EP, Disparate, following the release of the single “Akira”, having only just started making music earlier in 2021. Despite only creating music for a short period of time, the producer shows an immediate knack for rhythmic ideas and structures, with widespread creativity shown in a contrasting and constantly shifting palette of instrumentation.
As a bedroom producer, he’s entirely self-reliant for all composition, arrangement, performance and production, adding a personal stamp to his stripped back and unique sound. Though he draws influence from the likes of Siouxsie Sioux, Utada Hikaru and James Brown, it was when listening to The Creatures that his inspiration for the EP was sparked.
Commenting on the process for making this release, he offers, “When I created the songs I was thinking of something kind of dark and melodic at the same time. Something that had yet to be heard.” That originality was found, whilst finding out who he is as an artist.
Deep, eerie, atmospheric and full of tribal rhythms, Disparate offers something entirely new. It’s a body of work from a new artist who strives to make an unpredictable sound, unhindered by previous work or a desire to live up to something that’s been heard before.
