Hazel was originally formed as a solo project in 2018 by musician Trev Heaton at his East London studio, Gunfactory. Over the years the studio has been a creative hub, providing a home for notable acts such as The Horrors, Teleman and Let’s Eat Grandma amongst others.
Since then, the Hazel lineup has been completed by the additions of Levi Heaton initially, before the full live group with final additions, Delia Racheru on bass and Calvin Baeno on drums.
Their first two singles, “Occupy My Sun” and “Thinking On”, were well received and enjoyed radio airtime on the John Kennedy show on radio X and Amazing Radio, plus a debut show at The Social in London at the end of 2019 for Radio 1’s The Huw Stephens presents show.
With the pandemic scuppering the band’s live show plans, they capitalised on the chance to spend more time writing and recording new material, with the first taste of those efforts coming from their latest release with the single “Start Over”.
Since its release, “Start Over” has gained radio support and new fans both sides of the Atlantic, ahead of the band’s debut album set to drop later this month. Spaced-out and colourful, the new single offers the first taste of their upcoming LP. “Start Over” offers a subtle and psychedelic indie sound full of sophisticated writing, restrained vocal delivery and twanging guitar.
Commenting on the release, Trev Heaton says the band, “tried to be brave with this one, musically more adventurous I would say and it’s definitely a direction that the rest of the album is shaping up to be.”
Adding, “The track lyrically anyway, is a reflection of the time spent in isolation during the pandemic and the profound effect it’s had on me and many other people.”
