At the age of 17, Nashville native Matthew Solberg first picked up his father’s guitar and began his musical journey. A few years later, he started writing his own music, culminating in his debut album in 2009 with I Am A Fool, followed up by 2011’s LP Matthew Solberg.
Now the artist returns after a ten year hiatus of releasing music with the new album Solzys which features an array of outstanding local Nashville musicians. Produced by Schylar Shoates, the album sees Matthew joined by the likes of Dave Dunseath and Christopher Williams on drums, Luis Espaillat and Dean Tomasek on bass, Luke Schneider on pedal steel and Jimmy Wallace on keys.
Channeling the sounds of Elliott Smith and Matthew Sweet, the artist delivers a worthy indie folk sound across Solzys that flutters through emotions, bending from anguish to apprehension. Covering topics of past trauma on “Tina’s Song”, dealing with grief and loss on “Sun Comes Up” to the angsty “Problem”, he guides the listener through his own emotive road of reflection.
Commenting on the album, he offers, “I just tried to write from an honest perspective. The album name is meant to be a screen name, and the idea is that it seems easier to be open/honest when we’re anonymous (at least it seems that way to me). It’s mainly an album of reflections, mainly self-reflections on my life over the past several years, but also reflections on others close to me.”
