American musician Peter LaBarge releases music under the Beatnik alias, creating soulful indie pop jams that draw on influences from artists such as Price, Daft Punk, Chic and George Benson.
Originating as a term to describe the Beat Generation; the “Beatnik” name alludes to a bygone era made up of young artists and poets staking their claim in a brand-new world. Taking inspiration from the bold artists of that generation, Beatnik attempts to recreate the ruminations of that creative period; with a medium of pop, disco, funk, and a splash of jazz.
Over the last couple of years he’s released several well received singles such as “Reel To Reel” and “Baby Boy” and dropped his debut EP, Night Shift, last year. Following on from the EP and the subsequent single “Free Your Mind”, he returns with his latest track, “Hidden Love”.
His new single is a softly grooving, playful track about falling in love. An old-school soul vibe mixes with a glossy pop sound, on “Hidden Love” Beatnik delivers an upbeat rhythmic disco vibe full of colour and charm.
A delicate arrangement of sparkling synths and guitars, Beatnik’s expressive vocals float superbly on this graceful indie pop piece that retains a modern feel while still nodding back to classic funk and soul.
Commenting on the track, he offers, “The song is about lost love, and rediscovering it again. Probably a lot of people can relate to breaking up with someone and then getting back together(or wanting to).
Adding, “I definitely have experienced that, and the reminiscing that comes with it. This tune is about
those feelings. Rediscovering the love you didn’t know that you had for someone.”
