Helsinki-based artist Tom Tikka releases solo material with The Missing Hubcaps and is also one half of Finnish pop duo The Impersonators. He first picked up the guitar at the age of six after hearing Paul Anka’s “Lonely Boy” in his father’s old Chevrolet. Not long after, he began writing his own music and began a bountiful music journey which has seen him signed to Sony/Warner Music as a member of Carmen Gray.
With several well received releases from Carmen Gray and The Impersonators under his belt, he began working with MTS Records in 2020 on his solo project, kicking off with the debut EP Working Class Voodoo, striking a chord with fans at home and abroad, finding chart spots in the UK and internationally.
On his latest album, he found success with the notable tracks “Doormat” and “With Eyes Closed”, both climbing charts the world over and being featured on Huffington’s Thrive Global, Authority Magazine, Melody Maker Magazine, Ballroom Blitz, The Hollywood Digest, VENTS Magazine and many others, while his music videos have won at film festivals around the world.
Now the prolific nordic artist brings us his latest release with the single “By 2022”, a beautifully crafted indie rock hit that’s both fiercely catchy and especially current. Despite having a stellar 2021 – over the past 12 months, Tikka and his band have enjoyed two international iTunes chart #1s, plus another Top 5 hit with Tikka himself bagging an International Singer Songwriters Association Award – the new single sees his bargaining for a miracle from the New Year, instilling a sense of humble authenticity into the music.
Commenting on the track, Tikka says, “Although this track might sound like a song that’s sung to a toxic lover, it’s actually a song sung to the year 2022. ‘By 2022’ was born out of an extremely naïve thought that perhaps by the time the year changes, everything will fall into place miraculously. I’m sure I’m not the first person to play such mind games. Of course, in real life, miracles don’t come around very often. My grandma used to say, ‘If you want a miracle, work hard at producing one.’ Obviously, she was right. Yet, every once in a while, it’s wonderful to take a break from reality and pretend that you can have a conversation with the future, a bargaining session almost, where you speak your mind bluntly and express your fears, hopes and dreams, and possibly change things for the better.”
Adding, “It dawned on me, as I was listening to a radio program about New Year’s resolutions, that for most of us the concept of a new year is rather important. A new year is like a clean slate, an opportunity to start afresh and not repeat the mistakes you’ve made in the past. It gives us hope and it gives us consolation. Thomas Jefferson once said, ‘I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.’ So do I, Thomas… so do I.”
