Finch Faux is an indie artist hailing from the unlikely inland Australian town of Temora. Now based in the city of Melbourne, she’s been releasing her own music in the build up to her debut album, Flounderbound, released later this year. Recorded over the last two years, her upcoming LP evokes strong female voices of the past and present, while standing firmly as its own piece.
This 10-track offering is rich with modern instrumentation, a beguiling backdrop to Finch Faux’s seductive investigations of identity and facade will be her first official release, despite having been writing since the age of twelve.
Growing up in a musical family, her passion was nurtured from an early age. In her songs, she nods to her root with a sense of rural warmth that can still be heard as a counterpoint to the cool edge her music now possesses, guided by the laneways and architecture of her current Melbourne home.
Her compositions centre around her delicate and emotive vocals, delivering haunting melodies over a synth-based instrumentation arrangement to create a sound that’s both eerie and euphoric. Her deeply personal music elicits emotions of stumbling across a secret house party show and feeling the singer is speaking straight to you, while the crisp production adds a grandeur that would also be welcome on the main stage of any summer festival.
Now she brings us the third single lifted from her forthcoming album, with the track “Winter Winds”, written in her Melbourne apartment one afternoon in the winter of 2018. Produced by Tobias Priddle, the track makes use of a strong and constant drum beat and droning synth bass with vocals weaved together in harmony.
As her vocal lines swell, the lyrics of the song focus on words of encouragement and empathy to a threatening warning of defiance. Creating rich indie pop textures has become a trademark of this new Australian artist who has demonstrated a penchant for making stunning and original music her own way.
Commenting on the release, she offers, “I suppose I wrote it about the attempt we probably all make to remain humble yet assertive in this ever-changing world. For me, maintaining that balance is wildly difficult.”
