Warahenege is the Manchester-based dream pop brainchild of artist Praveen Somarathne. Influenced by the likes of Grizzly Bear, TV on The Radio, Radiohead, The National and Bon Iver he crafts airy indie music that’s both melancholic and gracious.
Now the songsmith brings us the second single from his upcoming debut EP with the track “Skyscrapers and Ocean”, recorded in the artist’s bedroom and mixed and mastered by Ben Etter in Atlanta. Capturing an emotive intimacy from a solitary recording, the track finds Warahenege reflecting on a particularly affecting conversation with someone very close to him.
Navigating the tumultuous conversation; its words, the visceral reactions, the painful over-scrutiny, the selfish thoughts and stunned helpless silences and finally vocalises the deeply honest farewell he could not express at the time. He finds no tangible resolution but offers a very tentative hope.
Offering a sound profound and stunningly warm, the artist lays down a serene vocal track over a reverb drenched indie arrangement creating work with the sonic aesthetic and appeal of the best of Cigarettes After Sex. Blending soft, velvety vocals and hypnotic guitars, “Skyscrapers and Oceans” offers a swirling dream pop instant classic.
On his new EP, he offers, “The songs are a born from and soundtrack ruminations in the small hours of the night, the twilight car rides and the restless ennui that makes itself home in the lonely silence.”
